About the Knights Competitive Program

In addition to its House League program, the Knights Lacrosse Association also offers a competitive lacrosse program. All players are encouraged to play in both programs. The NKMLA tries to field two teams at each level, from Tyke to Midget and a single Intermediate team, where numbers are sufficient.

Try-outs start in early April and practice is normally scheduled for once or twice a week. The teams participate in several tournaments throughout the season. The Novice to Midget Number 1 teams usually participate in 4 tournaments: 2 in the Toronto area, and two local tournaments in Nepean and Gloucester. The Tykes, all Number 2 teams and the Intermediate team usually participate in the 3 local tournaments: Cornwall, Nepean and Gloucester. All teams can and are encouraged to participate in the Provincial Tournament. The Provincial tournaments are offered at the level of competition of your team. Teams that reach the “A” level, based on the decision of the coached and parents, play an additional two qualifier tournaments in the Toronto area.

The Association promotes the competitive season as a family event. We try to arrange tournaments and hotels together as an Association. Many families bring their BBQs, plan events/excursions around the tournament games, etc. in an attempt to try to make the weekend a semi-family vacation with the added lacrosse games. Family vacation times are accommodated during the season but for the lead up time to the Provincials, the Association does ask each family be committed to the team and its development and to plan around this time to allow sufficient preparation time for the Team.

Intermediate Competitive Team

The Knights will again be running an Intermediate (17-21 years old) competitive team. This will be the only offering at this age age group for the 2010 season due to a lack of Juvenile aged players (16-17) signing up and the lack of Juvenile teams in the province to play against. The first tryout will be Tuesday April 27 8:00 - 9:00pm at the John Mlacak Arena.

The OLA is intending to split of the 17-21 year old age group into Juvenile (16-17) and Intermediate (18-21) in order to give an opportunity to the younger age group to play without having to compete against players several years older and to provide a better development path into Junior A or B lacrosse. The Knights will follow the development of the Juvenile-Intermediate split and will work towards having separate teams when the time is correct

Competitive Team-1 Players

Based on the positive feedback from the previous seasons, and in response to concerns regarding competitive and house league player development, burnout, and over-scheduling, Nepean Knights have decided, that the players on the Novice to Midget Team-1 competitive teams will not play in the House League Program. While there were many factors on both sides to do this, the main consideration was that the house league program would not suffer by removing a full team of players and associated coaches. It is therefore is subject to the final registration numbers at each age level and will be decided on by the executive prior to 2010 season starting. If the numbers at any age level are not sufficient, then Team-1 players will be required to play on a House League team. The Nepean Knights are still committed to having a Team-2, or even a Team-3 at every age level, where player interest and volunteers permit. Team-2 players will still be required to play in the House League and final tryouts for those teams will take place once house league is underway. If there are sufficient numbers for house league, Team-2 players may also be not play in the House League at the discretion of the executive commitee.
